Student story: Chance Faulkner
Chance Faulkner, MTh graduate and Union’s Director of Publishing, tells us about his experiences of studying with Union.
“Studying at Union has been a tremendous time, and in many ways life-transforming.
“My first module was Soteriology and the Reformation. I intended to go deeper in comprehension of doctrine truths. To my surprise, the module was not primarily a study about different historical and doctrinal truths looked at from afar, seated in our comfortable theological armchairs. Rather, it gave me a taste of the heart-winning, overwhelmingly beautiful God as expressed in the Reformation. Here was a God that deserves my devotion, my heart. Here is a God I could love. In a fresh way, and maybe even for the first time, I saw the heart of God for real sinners like me.
“Certainly, Union is academically rigorous and theologically robust—I am a better academic and theologian. Yet it has shown me time and time again that the Lord is not to just be comprehended, but to be loved. To be enjoyed. A theology that enflames the heart, giving a taste of the beauty and loveliness of the triune God. The treasure of our theological study is Christ himself. This changes how we do theology. This changes the Christian life. This changed me.
“In God’s kind providence, while I was a student, Union heard I had experience in publishing so they approached me to ask if I might consider helping them to launch their publishing house. They wanted to publish resources that help believers to delight in God, grow in Christ, serve the church, and bless the world. Resources that will enflame the heart to rejoice in Christ. Here was a ministry I wanted to be part of. Here was a ministry I could go all in for.
“We launched Union Publishing on January 2022 (whilst I was still in living in Canada), and Union asked me to consider joining them full-time as publishing director. Our family was eager to jump in, and so we sold everything we had and moved our family to Wales at the end of 2022. It’s been an incredibly fruitful time working alongside the best people. We have published 14 titles, recorded dozens of video teaching series, with many more on the horizon, and we regularly hear from those across the world how our resources are being used as a means of bringing reformation to their hearts and fuel their delight in Christ.
“There is no place I’d rather be.”
